HOME BEFORE DARK
APPLE TV

Home Before Dark is a recently released TV series available on the AppleTV service.
IMDb simply explains the show as follows; A young girl from the big city uncovers clues to an unsolved cold case while visiting her father's small lakeside town.
It is so much more than this.
For starters, the family moves to the town where the young nine year old girl, Hilde Lysiak, uncovers a secret or two that unveils more secrets like the peeling of an onion.
Something terrible happened in this town, Erie Harbor, when the girl's father was a young boy. He has never spoken of it to his wife and he carries the scars deep. But, when Hilde (who is much like her father in the sense that she shares his skills and love of investigative reporting) starts digging into a tragic death in the neighbourhood, the scars are reopened and old wounds throughout Erie Harbor are felt throughout the township.
I think it's important to say that Hilde has two sisters. Izzy, who is older; dealing with her family's troubles, moving to a new town and all the problems of adolescence; played marvellously by Kylie Rogers. Ginny, the youngest sibling; who doesn't get as much screen time as the other two; portrayed by Mila Morgan.
The girls father, Matt, played by Jim Sturgess, moves the family from New York after hitting a wall with his journalistic career. His hopes are to move back to his hometown to embark on writing a novel. The show is as much about him as it is about his daughter Hilde. Both of these characters are inspired by real people of the same names, but the events taking place in the show are fictional.
The supporting cast, old and young, are all terrific. The casting crew of this show have certainly accomplished something great here. This is most parent with the screen stealer of the series, none other than the main protagonist and actor playing Hilde Lysiak, Brooklynn Prince. The range of emotion this kid portrays is amazing for such a young person.
At first glance of the show poster, I thought Home Before Dark would just be another kiddie-style mystery show, aimed at a younger audience. I was wrong.
This is something for all ages, perhaps not for the little ones as there are themes that require a more mature understanding and some coarse language can be found dotted throughout.
If you're in the mood for some quality entertainment, good production value, and nothing too deep where you'll need a slide-rule to work out the story, may I recommend Home Before Dark from AppleTV.
